Undoubtedly one of the most enigmatic forces on the international comedy circuit, Des Bishop has established himself as one of Ireland’s finest comedians. Widely known for the hugely successful television series, Des Bishop’s Work Experience on RTE, Des has developed a unique style of observational comedy, most critical of his adopted home in Ireland and the America he left behind.
In March 2008 Des completed twelve months of intense study and immersion in an effort to speak Ireland’s mother tongue. As the ultimate step towards Irishness, Des Bishop’s move to the Connemara Gaeltacht was his most formidable challenge yet. RTE filmed Des’s progress for his third television series In the Name of the Fada, a revolutionary six-part comedy documentary that aired to record audiences. Drawing from his experiences, Des developed his latest stand up show TONGUES, which is currently touring Ireland.
After Des’s second TV show, Joy in the Hood (RTE) aired to huge audiences and generated equal amounts of controversy in January 2006, Des toured with his live show, FITTING IN viewed by over 100,000 people and released his live DVD of the same name in November 2006. The FITTING IN Tour and DVD focused on some of Des’s experiences filming Joy in the Hood, which featured the comedian teaching stand-up comedy whilst living in a range of marginalized communities, including Knocknaheeny in Cork, Southill in Limerick and Mount Vernon in Belfast.
Des Bishop has released three stand-up DVDs including Des Bishop Live on DVD which secured a position in the top ten for the busy Christmas period in 2005. As organiser and resident MC of the International Comedy Club in Dublin, Des has gone onto perform at some of the World’s most prestigious comedy festivals including Aspen, Edinburgh, and Ireland’s own Kilkenny Cat Laughs Festival. In his ‘down time’ Des penned two stage plays in collaboration with Arthur Riordan.
