Firmly established as a major force on Ireland’s comedy circuit, comedian Des Bishop is widely recognised as one of Ireland’s biggest comedic assets. In 2005 he was invited to perform at all three of the World’s most prestigious comedy festivals this year; Aspen, Montreal and the Cat Laugh’s. Unfortunately a performance at Montreal was ruled out due to filming commitments with RTE, but Bishop wowed crowds at both Aspen in February and the Cat Laughs in June, rubbing shoulders with some of the World’s most successful and high profile comedians.
In early 2003 Des made his mark on the Irish public with his massively successful RTE documentary “The Des Bishop Work Experience” and since then he has gone from strength to strength, with his comedy CV enhanced by far more than just his minimum wage work experience. His 2nd RTE documentary, Joy In The Hood, featured the comedian teaching stand-up comedy whilst living in a range of marginalized communities around Ireland. …..
The native New Yorker’s stand-up has been described as “Dynamic” (The List) and has become a firm favourite with comedy fans in Ireland and well beyond. Des is committed to mentoring stand-up comedians and founded the International Comedy Club in Dublin, which showcases new Irish talents three nights a week (Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays).
His DVD “Des Bishop Live at Vicar Street”, which was originally released in December 2003, was re-released just in time for Christmas 2004 due to phenomenal demand. Somewhere in between the new TV documentary, the festivals and his work at the International Comedy Club Des has found the time to partner with Arthur Riordan and work on a new stage play – their second collaboration following the successful ‘Rap Eire’ in 2001.
Des’s numerous TV and radio accolades include featuring as team captain on RTE’s ‘Don’t Feed The Gondola’s’, ‘The Empire Laughs Back’ (BBC2), as a writer, performer on RTE’s ‘X-It File’ with Colin Murphy, a small but memorable part in Jim Sheridan’s ‘In America’ and guest presenting on RTE1’s ‘Liveline’, 98FM’s ‘After Dark’, ‘The Talk of Dublin’ and ‘The Red Rooster’ on Cork’s Red FM.
