Tom Hickey

Biography - Tom Hickey trained at the Stanislavsky Studio with Deirdre O'Connell and was a founder member of Dublin Focus Theatre, playing in such works as Miss Julie, Antigone, Uncle Vanya and The Night of the Iguana. In 1970 he directed and played in The Goodbye Machine by Lee Gallagher. This was the Project's first ever theatre presentation and was staged in the then Project Art Gallery in Lower Abbey Street. He has worked extensively at the Abbey theatre, playing in Brecht's Galileo (title role), Of Mice and Men, The Silver Dollar Boys, I Do Not Like Thee Doctor Fell, Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme, Misogynist, The Great Hunger, The Gigli Concert, Portia Coughlan and Give Me Your Answer, Do!, as well as many others. While at the Abbey he collaborated with writers Tom Mac Intyre and Patrick Mason on several theatre of the image plays - The Great Hunger (tours to Edinburgh, London, Paris, Moscow, Leningrad, New York and Annamakerrig), The Bearded Lady, Rise Up Lovely Sweeny, Dance for Your Daddy and Snow White. He also directed Mac Intyre's Chickadee at Red Kettle and Sheep's Milk on the Boil at the Peacock and played in The Chirpaun and Caoineadh Ui Laoighaire. He has appeared at the Gate Theatre in Heartbreak House, Waiting for Godot, Aristocrats, Three Sisters, Double Dealer, A Midsummer Night's Dream, London Assurance, She Stoops to Conquer, Dorian Grey, Great Expectations, Stella by Starlight and Lady Windermere's Fan. Other appearances include The Kiss by Michael Harding and The Gay Detective by Gerard Stembridge at the Project Arts Centre Massive Damages by Declan Lynch for Passion Machine and St Joan at the Abbey Theatre. Tom also appeared in Tarry Flynn at the Abbey Theatre and the National Theatre, London. Tom’s other credits include By the Bog of Cats at the Abbey Theatre for the Dublin Theatre Festival and a tour of England with The Weir directed by Ian Rickson. Tom was recently seen in On Rafferty’s Hill for Druid Theatre and the Royal Court. He most recently appeared in his acclaimed one-man show, The Gallant John Joe (by Tom Mac Intyre) at the 2002 Edinburgh Festival, which received rave reviews and a number of major awards nominations, and continues to tour Ireland. Film and television credits include: Most recently appeared as ‘Malcolm Able’ in Headrush – a new Irish feature film written and directed by Shimmy Marcus. He recently played Mr. Hayes in Coney Island Baby, directed by Amy Hobby. He also played Blackadder in the film of A.S. Byatt’s Possession (dir: Neil Labute). For R.T.E., he was seen as ‘Billy’ in Black Day At Black Rock written and directed by Gerry Stembridge. Other film work includes: The Butcher Boy, Double Carpet, Before I Sleep, Gold In the Streets, Circle of Friends, Raining Stones, The Miracle, Fools of Fortune, Big Swinger, Nuns on the Run, High Spirits, Gothic, Desecration, To The Western World, Cal, Flight of the Doves.
